Pump/Pipe and open channel loop

Pump/Pipe and open channel loop

Pump/Pipe and open channel loop

(OP)
I am working on an interactive display for an exhibit at a museum.  I am creating a river flow channel.  It consists of a re-circulating system with the pump and pipe system under the channel and a close to rectangular cross section for the river channel above.

I need to calculate the pressure drop for the system.

I am trying to size the pump and pipe system.

Any suggestions???

Details:
-10ft long, 2.666ft wide, and 0.5ft deep channel.
-PVC piping
-Required flow rate 0.22 ft/s in channel
-Must be a single phase powered pump

RE: Pump/Pipe and open channel loop

Flow = Q = VA = .22 * 2.666 * .5 = .29 CFS = 131 Gallons per minute

Using the Mannings equation, the slope calculates to just 0.00002 ft/ft.

You probably will have about 3-5 feet of headloss in your piping.

You need a low head pump; sized for 131 gpm @ 3-5 ft TDH.

Thank you.

RE: Pump/Pipe and open channel loop

I see in the other post that you also have a filter. The filter headloss will probably range in the 5-10 ft range.

So you pump should be sized for 131 gpm @ 13-15 ft TDH.

You can probably find a Crane Deming pump that will work in that flow range.
