Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

(OP)
Hi everyone,

Let's say we create a sheet body (simple extrusion). Later we discover we want this body to be solid instead. So we edit the sheet body and change the body type from "sheet" to "solid". The solid is created fine. The problem is, the color and line width stays the same as the sheet body. By just looking at the color you'd think the body is still a sheet, but it's actually a solid. This completely negates the purpose of having different colors and line widths for sheet and solid bodies.

Is this a bug or is there a setting to make sure that a sheet body will always have the color of a sheet body, and a solid body will always have the color of a solid body?

Thanks.

RE: Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

I would say that this is "As is". I believe that :
When you create a new object , NX will read the settings for the "default object display" and create that object .
But when you change from sheet to solid, there is no editing mechanism that also re-reads the object preferences and thus changes the color.
if you want this, you probably need to file an Enhancement request with GTAC.

This also happens when sewing surfaces together into a solid. The resulting solid has the same color and line formatting as the surfaces, when in preferences I've specified different colors and line widths for sheets and solids.

In Solidworks, solids always have black edge color and surfaces have blue edge color. In Pro/engineer, solids always have grey edge color and surfaces have purple edge color. In NX I have no idea which is surfaces and which is solids.

It is hard to believe this is intended behavior or "As is".

RE: Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

It would be more appropriate to say that this is working 'as designed'.  If you read the NX Help documents you will see that this is spelled out in complete detail as to what the behavior is that you should expect:

The Object Preferences dialog box defines the layer, color, font, and width of new objects. It does not affect existing objects, nor objects created by copying existing objects.

Seems pretty clear, eh?

To an Engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

RE: Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

I do not believe this is an issue so much with the software as it is your becoming more comfortable with it; be patient and you will appreciate its strengths.

Technically, the glass is always  full.

RE: Color stays the same when changing sheet to solid body

I agree that it would be a nice option to have; as Toost said, you should contact GTAC (Siemens' technical team) and have them open an enhancement request. This is the only sure way to let the developers know what features you want/need.

Gentlemen, I'm grateful for your feedback. In the meantime I'll simply keep the colors and linewidth the same for both sheet and solid bodies in the preferences to avoid confusion.
