Vertical Vessel Maximum Dimensions for Patch Plate

Vertical Vessel Maximum Dimensions for Patch Plate

Vertical Vessel Maximum Dimensions for Patch Plate

(OP)
I need a reference for calculation method to find maximum dimension of window patch at any location of vessel shell. This calculation is to ensure the stability of vertical vessel during window patching process without any temporary support required. Consideration to be given for weight and wind loading during shell plate removal. Optionally, include method where temporary stiffners (supports) are installed to prevent deformation and add support, including sizing requirements for stiffners.

RE: Vertical Vessel Maximum Dimensions for Patch Plate

I suggest you perform an Eigenvalue finite element evaluation of the vessel with hole cut out or with hole cut out and stiffeners added to determine if you have sufficient safety factor against collapse.

Alternatively, you may consider encapsulation of the degraded shell area without breach or removal of the existing pressure boundary wall.  This restoration method is accepted by National Board inspection Code per Interpretation 04-01.  If you are interested in this method please let me know and I can provide you all details and assistance in the steps required for obtaining restoration hardware and its implementation process.

Just a clarification because I was involved with the interpretation, the National Board does NOT endorse or accept anything. The encapsulation method above is not prohibited by the NBIC, but must be acceptable to the Inspector and if applicable the Jurisdiction.
