API RP 1102 Question

API RP 1102 Question

API RP 1102 Question

(OP)
I am attempting to perform RP 1102 calculations to a group of pipelines that have a depth of cover less than 3 feet.  Since some of the figures' curves stop at a minimum of 3 feet, does anyone know how to interpolate from them, if possible, to account for lesser depths?  My guess is that 3 feet is used since this is typically the minimum depth per 192, 195, B31.4 and B31.8.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: API RP 1102 Question

A cover less than 4 feet minimum clear is prohibited for crossings.  Besides, it's not a good idea to interpolate those curves at lesser depths, since the loads become much more concentrated on the arc of the pipe.  Lesser depths might be contemplated for private drives (ONLY in extreme circumstances which probably would not be approved), but only with significant mechanical protection provided between the surface and the pipeline, such as a thick reinforced concrete slab, or box culvert.  Anybody I know would require that the pipeline be lowered, or the road surface raised.  Do not interpolate under any circumstances.

Thanks, BigInch.  I appreciate the feedback.  Now, a follow-up - do anyone know if anyone sells API RP 1102 software so that one doesn't have to read those darned curves?  Supposedly, there is an RP 1102 Pisces program out there, but, Google isn't finding it.

RE: API RP 1102 Question

If I'm not mistaken, Pisces was an old program developed for design of piles with lateral loads.  Can be done easily in Excel these days, so it's probably in the recycle bin by now.

I think the Toolbox has a module to do it.  Never used it, but it seems to be popular.  Check vpl's link and see if you like it.
