mass properties of a composite layup

mass properties of a composite layup

mass properties of a composite layup

(OP)
Hi,

modeling a wind turbine blade (using shell elements) in ABAQUS/CAE 6.11-1, i encountered the following problem:
In order to match the structure of a real turbine blade, i created a composite layup consisting of several plies, whose thicknesses are not defined by a constant value but by discrete field distributions (Location: Elements, Type: Scalar). The discrete fields assign a thickness value to each Element ID.
After running the analysis i had a look at the translations, mass properties and the ply stack plot in the visualization module.
The ply thicknesses that are defined by the discrete fields were all equal 1.0 and did not appear with the assigned values, which were much smaller.
The mass properties also suggested, that Abaqus obviously uses the value 1.0 instead of the wanted thicknesses to visualize the model and calculate its mass properties.
Nevertheless the translation output strongly suggested, that the analysis calculations were run with the thickness values determined by the discrete fields: I varied the thickness values in the discrete field and ran the analysis again several times. The translations of certain nodes did correspond with these changes as i would have expected them to, but the mass properties remained the same (the ply stack plot too).
My problem is that i want to match the mass properties and mechanical properties (stiffnesses, eigenfrequencies...) and therefore also need the true mass of the blade.
One more hint: When i select Tools->Query->mass properties in the part module the programm displays the following warning: "Warnings: The mass properties could not be accurately computed due to the following issues detected while querying the selected region(s) - smeared properties."

Does anybody has an idea or solution? I really appreciate any help.

Best regards,
Tristan
