Basics of Point Cloud

Basics of Point Cloud

Basics of Point Cloud

(OP)
Hey all,

I am relatively new to NX (6-8 months) and am using NX7.

I am looking for a tutorial that could walk me through how to take a set of points and create a surface from them.

I have created a test surface using two splines and through curves and created a set of points equally spaced on it however every time I use point cloud the edges drop off and form a sharp point (ie. does not follow the set of points I created) and when I try to use "through points" NX tells me I don't have enough row/column degrees.

As a second question, if I had points extracted from a sphere, is there any way to recreate said sphere using the points as a starting point? (no pun intended!)

I've looked at the "Create Surface using Splines/Through Points?" topic @ http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=151574 but wasn't able to follow most of what was said after the original post.

Thanks,
Jerry

RE: Basics of Point Cloud

Functions like...

Insert -> Surface -> From Point Cloud...

...will always create a 4-sided surface, which means that it will also have 4 'corners'.

BTW, you also need to get off of NX 7.0 ASAP.

Ok, why shouldn't I be on ver.7? Not that I have that much control over the issue (company-wide software) but if there are serious productivity problems or if 7 doesn't play well with TeamCenter it could help us move up the time table for upgrading.

Thanks,
Jerry

RE: Basics of Point Cloud

It's basically on critical maintenance only and was all but obsolete shortly after it was shipped.  NX 7.5 was the major release which is still under full maintenance will be for some time yet.  Of course, you should really be planning to move to NX 8.0.1.5 as that's the current full production release which is being BOTH maintained AND ENHANCED.
