Interference Fit
Interference Fit
(OP)
I'm looking to reduce ID of sleeve that is pressed into a housing. But I don't want to crush the sleeve.
The housings can be 1030 or 1050 steel and the sleeve is 1018 steel. The current sleeve is 1.281" OD at MMC, ID is 1.060" LMC, with a length of 1.25". Hole in the housing is 1.287.
This application is currently working. I'm looking to increase the ID of sleeve by as much as possible without the possibility of crushing the sleeve during installation. The numbers I've been coming up with aren't making sense. Any tips would be appreciated.

RE: Interference Fit
Assuming you eventually get the dimensions and tolerances sorted out, when you say you fear "crushing the sleeve", are you talking about radial buckling of a thin sleeve emanating directly from the press fit itself, or are you talking about axial buckling of the sleeve as a column from the press force?

RE: Interference Fit
Ok basically interference of .006" and I'm reducing the thickness of the sleeve. So its more likely to fail.
Could fail from either buckling from the press load or radially from the pressure of the the interference.
Thanks for your help.

The thru hole is 1.281 ID and must fit a tube if maximum OD 1.287 inches. The width of contact is 1.25 inches. If the present tube is OD ID 1.060 inches, how much more can I increase it, i.e. Minimize the tubing wall, so that failure by collapse is not an issue?
I think this is your question, no? Hope it is not a homework assignment!
