We are designing a pressure vessel that we need to add a nozzle to.  The question is what are the requirements that dictate how close a feature (the nozzle) can be with respect to an adjacent welded joint?  What part of section VIII would be most applicable in determining this spacing?

Which Division?

Division 1

COrino, kind of depends on the opening and welded joint. Openings may be placed in a welded seam, see UW-14.

Opening limits of reinforcement may contain a welded joint, see UG-37, definition E1.

Opening limits of reinforcement may not contain bolt flange material, see UG-40(e).

If your work is governed by other parts, such as UHA, UNF, UHX, etc. you should consult thise parts as well.

Now, as a practical matter it is good practice to separate welds by 1 to 2 inch toe-to-toe for inspection purposes.

Mike

Totally, I am in agreement with SnTMan, you are to be in compliance with paragraph UW-14.
