Cold Calling

Cold Calling

Cold Calling

(OP)
Everything I have read says a cold calling makes you look desperate and thats not a good thing. So I come from a manufacturing back ground and I see many many projects come through. Now as a manufacturer I know how to go after the project when I am bidding per the entire scope. However when you're the engineer and someone else is building what you design, simply reaching out to the contractor or the Architect falls back to cold calling. So to my question.

I find a project that may have some engineering needs. ( I pulled the project from read or ISQFT). At this point everything is out for bid...

What should my plan of attack be?

1)    Wait until everything bids, get in touch with the architect find out who the winning contractor is and then Cold Call the contractor?
2)    Get a list of contractors that are bidding and again cold call.
3)    How do I avoid cold calling?

RE: Cold Calling

Well the simple answer to question three is to have enough repeat business and a strong enough reputation within the industry that you don't need too, people come to you.

How you get to that point is a different matter and almost certainly involves cold calling or just waiting for people to find you.

A Business Development coworker, who got his travel budget zeroed, was asked by his boss how he was getting new business.

He replied, "I'm aggressively waiting for phone calls."

RE: Cold Calling

I would think any company of size would need to do some amount of cold calling.  There are trade shows, industry groups, and networking available, but nothing like going out and beating the bushes.  Personally, I don't like doing it.  It takes a certain type of person to make a living at business development.
