1900s Concrete Floor System: Columbian Floor System

(OP)
I am analyzing an existing building's floor framing, the building is from pre-1900s and utilizes what was known as a "Columbian Floor System".  Is anyone familiar with this type of construction?  I am trying to figure out whether or not I can consider composite action for the beams which are either iron or steel I-sections encased in concrete.

RE: 1900s Concrete Floor System: Columbian Floor System

I did a project a few years ago on an ancient floor system. We were able to weld studs for composite action. Check the AISC spec because they define how to achieve composite action without studs by encasing the beam. We also had to use lightweight concrete because the live load requirement had increased.

Try these links for background on the system you cited:

I'm sure if you search book.google.com you can find additional bucks on the subject.
