Steel beam with steel pipe end plates

(OP)
I have an interesting situation where I have 2 steel beams with steel pipe end plates to support some large loads. Please see the attached sketch.
I am concerned about the transfer of moment and shear through the pipe to the support and how I can strengthen it externally.
Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated.

RE: Steel beam with steel pipe end plates

Nothing showing in attachment....either one

RE: Steel beam with steel pipe end plates

It sounds like an interesting problem .. But I can't open any attachment either (Get a blank (white) "pdf" page.)

I'm trying how you can make a round "pipe" into a flat (?) "endplate" attached to a W shape.   8<)

RE: Steel beam with steel pipe end plates

You need to treat the ends of your flanges as rings.  Use a ring all the way around the pipes.  You would then effectively have a T-shape at each of your flanges in a ring shape.

Use formulas from Roark & Young "Formulas for stresses and strain"  to determine the stresses on your ring to determine the adequate ring thickness and if you have sufficient pipe wall thickness.

Am I describing this adequately?  Does this make sense or is a sketch necessary?
