Y Type Strainers
Y Type Strainers
(OP)
Hi All,
I have a Sulphuric Acid line, terminating in ASA 150 flanges, where we need to insert a plastic (PTFE, PVDF, or Polypropylene) Y strainer in between connections.
We are having difficulty sourcing a totally plastic strainer. We installed pipework in 2009 but due to site issues the process has not even begun yet! In 2009 we could source the Y strainer's locally and were under the impression they were 'off the shelf' items.
Now, it seems, there are hardly anyone who supply these products, and even the ones that do are charging incredibly high machining costs.
I understand the global situation surrounding Polymer and that these prices are bound to rise but not this much since 2009 surely?
I just want to know whether I'm being unreasonalbe, or if I am purely not looking hard enough. Or am I just wasting my time... might have to go with very expensive option or a cast metal with plastic lining (still expensive). Sizes are 1 & 2".
Any thoughts would be greatly received.
Many Thanks

RE: Y Type Strainers
Is there some really special requirement that you didn't tell us about?

I know that you can buy PP Y-filters for garden lagoons (koi carps). They are available up to 3" but I do not know if the mesh size and pressure meets your requirements. But it is perhaps a different approach than the ones you were taken so far.

No special requirement, just has to be ASA150 flanged both ends with all components made from PTFE/PVDF/Polyprop.
I am based in the UK too, so all American manufacturers seem to pass us to a UK distributor who obviously put prices up. We have a USA sister company who is trying to source direct from USA manufacturers but we're still struggling.
Thanks again.

Sorry, to clarify what I meant by expensive - in 2009 these were available locally ex-stock at £50-100. Until now, there's been pipework issues on-site, and now the issues are resolved, strainers and flexibles are the last items needed before process can begin. The local stockist now doesn't supply them, and we are now getting prices of $700+. We have conceded to the fact that they are not going to be as cheap as we first thought, but wanted everyone's opinion in case I was missing something.
Thanks
