loading of transformers

loading of transformers

loading of transformers

(OP)
hello

i have a case that i work on transformer its rated =500kva,loaded with 400kva,(i.e loading is 80%). i have backup transformer rated 250kva,what is the optimum loading for both transformers?

RE: loading of transformers

Depends on what you are trying to optimize.

Ok,lets say i will load the  back up transformer by (150kva),thus the loading of 500kva will be 250 kva instead of 400kva..what should i take into account to do any thing like that??

thanks a lot for your reply

RE: loading of transformers

If you energize both the transformers, the core (iron) losses increase.  The copper (load) losses vary as the square of the load, so there may be a point where the efficiency is maximized.  But this will require you to be able to transfer load between the two transformer fairly selectively, which is generally not practical.

If you are talking about putting the two transformers in parallel, that is another matter and probably not a good idea.

RE: loading of transformers

In general, maximum efficiency of a transformer is at the loading point when iron losses (no-load losses) and copper losses (load losses) are equal (e.g. chapter 5 in J&P transformer book 11.ed.).
Possibly your 80% loaded transformer is still below maximum efficiency loading.
