Min Depth of Mass Pad

Min Depth of Mass Pad

Min Depth of Mass Pad

(OP)
The following formula is presented in the IStructE green book "Manual for the design of RC building structures". It is used for calculating the min depth of an unreinforced mass pad. Can someone please give me an explanation as to where this comes from, what other formulae are manipulated in order to reach this formula.

h/a>0.15(q^2/fcu)^0.25

h=pad depth
q=bearing pressure
fcu=concrete strength
a=horizontal distance from column face to edge of pad.

If someone can help me with this it is very much appreciated.
