Erosion Resistance

Erosion Resistance

Erosion Resistance

(OP)
I know that hardness plays a large part in erosion resistance of metals.  My question is, what other properties (yield strength, ult. strength, etc.) must be considered to qualitatively compare different metals and their relative erosion resistance.  Assume a noncorrosive service (diatomaceous earth in refined nuetral oil), so erosion-corrosion is not an issue.  Specifically, this relates to pump M.O.C. choices, and all metals would be cast.

RE: Erosion Resistance

In the absence of corrosion, erosion resistance is equivalent to abrasive wear resistance.  This is proportional to hardness, except when the increased hardness comes from cold work or precipitation hardening.

RE: Erosion Resistance

You are perhaps referring to slurry pumps. Here noy only the hardness but also the abrasion resistance of the castings comes into play. High chrome cast irons are found to perform well under extreme wear conditions. NiHard castings arealso commonly used. The M27C3 type complex carbides in a martensitic matrix contribute to such good wear resistance. As a first approximation the pin on disc results are taken for relative material evaluation. We regularly manufacture this variety of castings for pump parts.
