Hilti Profis Edge Distance on Base Plate

Hilti Profis Edge Distance on Base Plate

Hilti Profis Edge Distance on Base Plate

(OP)
When using Hilti Profis to size cast-in-place threaded rods, the program is using a value for minimum edge distance from the base plate to the center of the hole equal to 1.5 times the hole diameter.  They're using a hole diameter equal to the anchor rod diameter plus 1/16".  So for a 1" diameter anchor rod, the hole diameter is 1.0625", and the minimum edge distance on the base plate is 1.5937".

Does anybody know where this 1.5*hole diameter value comes from?  Is it just something Hilti chose so they would have some value to use?

(It should not be related to any AISC requirements, because those requirements apply to high strength bolts in steel-to-steel connections.  They do not apply to anchor rods.  Hence why they prefer the term anchor "rods" over anchor "bolts.")

Ask Hilti.

I did, and this is the response I got.

Quote:

PROFIS Anchor permits users to adjust the distance from the center of the anchor to the edge of the base plate via the Project Options icon. The 1/16" hole clearance is based on the criteria given in the AISC Manual of Steel Construction.

See the screen shots below.
            * Click on the wrench icon at the upper left portion of the main screen.

            * Select Project Options.

            * Highlight the parameter for Anchor plate factor and input a desired value. See the tool tip in the screen shot for the factor parameters.

So, for example, if you want to adjust the edge distance between anchor and edge of plate, input a value for Anchor plate factor such that

(bolt diameter + 1/16")(anchor plate factor) = desired edge distance between the anchor and edge of plate.

They didn't say where the default 1.5 value comes from.

I've had pretty good luck calling the toll-free number and talking directly to one of their engineers

RE: Hilti Profis Edge Distance on Base Plate

Most of the Hilti design values are as the result of ETAG testing.  It is possible it came from this although I am guessing but that would be my starting point.  The reference is ETAG 001:

GUIDELINE FOR EUROPEAN TECHNICAL APPROVAL OF METAL ANCHORS FOR USE IN CONCRETE.  Annex C: DESIGN METHODS FOR ANCHORAGES.
