Plating for BBQ charcoal basket

Plating for BBQ charcoal basket

(OP)
Hi all,

I'm designing a bbq smoker kit that includes a basket to hold the lit charcoal. I would like to know if chrome or nickel plating is acceptable that close to a heat source in a food environment. Does anyone know of any specific FDA requirements for this?

I know that stainless is the obvious solution, but this kit is supposed to be at a low price point.

Thank you for your input.
