Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

(OP)
Does anyone have a resource with wood frame design example? Specifically, I am looking at a design example of a wood stud, rafter, ridge beam etc... to compare with the output of my structural software.
I know there is a good number of software, but verifying and ensuring you are using it correctly is important. Thanks!

RE: Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

Let's make a couple of assumptions first.

1. You are indeed an engineer
2. You are practicing in the US

In almost all states, you are required to validate your software by hand calculations and/or comparable output from different software.  Before you believe the output of your software, you need to have gone through an analysis and design so that you understand the process.

For wood design, you are going to have to deal with the National Design Standard (NDS) for wood and the variable properties of wood.  There are some design examples that go along with the NDS to get you started, but you really need to wade through a few of those before you rely on any software.

The same applies to AISC for steel, ACI for concrete and AA for aluminum.

Yup. That's why I'm looking for some solved design references/examples.

RE: Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

My 2005 NDS has a whole book on solved design examples, almost an inch thick.  Have you looked at that?  Also, try "Design of Wood Structures" by Breyer, Fridley, Pollock, and Cobeen.

These are pretty basic designs - should be easy to do by hand, using the NDS.

RE: Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

If you go to awc.org and purchase the Wood Design Package, one of the volumes is "Structural Wood Design Solved Example Problems". I'm sure it can be purchased separately as well.

RE: Any Wood Frame Example Availible?

The Solved Example Problems are definitely available separately.  That being said, I would purchase the Breyer book.  It is an excellent reference.
