Siphon Spillway Design

Siphon Spillway Design

Siphon Spillway Design

(OP)
I am beginning the research/analysis phase of a dam retrofit project.  The primary spillway (riser barrel) is severely corroded and will have to be replaced.  One option that I am considering is a siphon-type spillway, but I don't have any reference material on the design, detailing and critical issues on a spillway of this type.  Can anyone direct me to a good source of information on this subject?

RE: Siphon Spillway Design

do you mean a true siphon, or inverted?
Applied Hydraulics in Engineering by Morris and Wiggert has a good theoretical discussion of siphon spillways.

RE: Siphon Spillway Design

You might want to check out the available references from the US Corps of Engineers Coastal Hydraulics Lab.  Specifically, try http://chl.wes.army.mil/library/publications/hydraulic_design_criteria/
This reference covers many types of gates, spillways, and weirs and has textual guidance as well as design curves.

RE: Siphon Spillway Design

I think you should start with the publications of the U.S. BUREAU OF RECLAMATION. But if the dam, or the risks involved in the problem, are important, your first reference must be the publications of the Congresses of the ICOLD (International Comission on Large Dams).

Good luck.
