Pipe material for welded carbon steel

Pipe material for welded carbon steel

Pipe material for welded carbon steel

(OP)
Hi
what is the better option for welded C.S. pipe (SAW or EFW) for 26" and above?
Is it better to apply it starting from 26" or from 16"? At the moment I'm using API 5L Gr.B PSL2 SAW from 26", but several companies use different specifications.
Thanks

RE: Pipe material for welded carbon steel

SAW is a form of EFW. Do you mean ERW?

RE: Pipe material for welded carbon steel

An equally significant question :will it be straight seam or spiral ? Sprial had a reputation for being difficult to follow with NDE.

The pipe shall be straight seam for general process service at rating 150 and 300 LB. I'm looking inside several applicable pipe classes because the plant where I'm working had different revamping from different companies in the last years, and all them applied their own classes for the same services. Just for example I could use either API 5L Gr.B PSL2 SAW or ASTM A672 Gr.B60 Cl.12 EFW or A672 Gr.A55 Cl.13 EFW.

RE: Pipe material for welded carbon steel

For the most part the A-672 pipe will be welded with the SAW process. As previously stated, the SAW process is an EFW process.

RE: Pipe material for welded carbon steel

The fusion welding process is a much smaller concern than the testing of the resultant weld.  Any of the approved welding processes work well, IF THEY ARE PROPERLY ADJUSTED.

The only way to confirm that the welding is going well at the pipe mill is to test the weld seam as soon as possible.  I have met several 3-rd Party Inspectors that have found out-of-calibration UT or Eddy-Current [ET] equipment in use at pipe mills.  Want to guess how many flawed welds were shipped based on this "testing"?

It's not the process, it is the care and professionalism of the pipe mill.
