you should define you own areas of application then select the most suitable software keeping in account required features, your budget, commercial conditions, technical assistance, etc. etc. etc...
RE: Process Engineering Tools
According to my limited knowledge and experience.
Chemcad: is very simple and easy to understand software i would like to recommend beginners to start with chemcad. In this way they can easily understand how to make use of simulation softwares.
Hysys:
Hysys is very effective software especially for steady state simulation and especially for petroleum products. Relative to chemcad it is a bit difficult to make user interface. Hysys new version with DEtherm interface is quiet helpful to get useful data from the world's renowned data bank.
Aspen Plus:
Aspen plus is a versatile simulation and design software with friendly interface. It is well known for its excellent simulation engine and variety of processes involved in chemical engineering.
SimSci-ProII
I do not have much experience with proII. Experts are requested to comment please?

RE: Process Engineering Tools
This is impotant in order to understand what the results mean and if they are the results you are looking for.
Apart from this i can only say that Aspen i quite expensive and they are not easy to negotiate a discout from. DesignII/winsim is very afordable if you are on a budget but dosnt have the broad user base. My experience is that they yield the same results (HYSYS and desigII) are about the same wrt user friendliness and the HYSYS have more options with regards to integration with other software (e.g. EXCEL).
Best regards

RE: Process Engineering Tools
If you prefer (as I do) to work with Excel, Matlab or similar software a rigorous process library as Prode Properties can provide several advantages as better integration, fast response, lower cost etc.
