Seal Balance Ratio And Face Width Adjustment

Seal Balance Ratio And Face Width Adjustment

Seal Balance Ratio And Face Width Adjustment

(OP)
I was hoping one of the seal experts could advise how they typically approach changing the face profile of the primary ring when trying to increase/decrease the balance ratio for various reasons.

Is the adjustment typically made with the primary ring OD or the primary ring ID? I would think in effort to utilize standard o-ring sizes, the balance diameter is typically unchanged. By definition, the OD is used in both the numerator and denominator of the equation, so I would think the variable of choice would be the ID dimension of the primary ring. Would this be the correct assumption?

I dont know why you are asking this question however I have attached some information for you.  I suggest that you do not play with the Ballance ratio of the seal because it may have a detrimental affect on the seal performance.  generally speaking seal balance in in the order of 70% and sometime the balance is changed to either lighten the load or increase the load.  for example if you had a hydrocarbon with high VP and the seal leakage was high, by increasing the BR you will achieve better sealing but sacrifice wear.  If this is a general question then fine but if you start playing with seal faces you also start moving away from standard parts and you have a special on your hand.

trust that this information is of some help to you.

RE: Seal Balance Ratio And Face Width Adjustment

By increasing the balance on a light hydrocarbon service, are we not generating a lot more heat in the seal chamber and increasing the risk of flashing??  I would think you would reduce the balance similar to what they do for water, close to 65%..why increase balance?

In your previous thread you said you were a complete novice , does water have the same characteristics as a hydrocarbon?  Do you understand what changing the balance of a seal does a seals performance?

RE: Seal Balance Ratio And Face Width Adjustment

You are full of explanations!  I am not challenging you, its a question..again..if you are not sure..just say so and we both will learn together..no shame in that:)..again..anybody else?

By the way, reference this website:  http://www.pump-zone.com/topics/seals/what-are-challenges-sealing-water-applications

It states "In its gas form, water behaves much like a flashing hydrocarbon with respect to load support and lubrication at the seal faces..."
