Hi,

Can anyone assist me please, I need to couple up to rotating shaft using a non-abrasive clutch.
The shaft is able spin in both directions, need a dynamic solution not a static one.

The clutching power must be of very high torque levels, e.g.;  a prop-shaft on  a car, the mechanism needs also to be inline.

Thanks,

Cosmos2c

Will a dog clutch work

How much control will be needed re selecting when to engage it, ie can someone pull a lever or whatever or does it need to be automatic.

Does the shaft need to idle free without drag for a certain time or is it gust to change direction.

Regards
Pat

Thanks Pat,

I suppose it will be easier to state that I have a new shaft mechanism to brake the rotating shaft. I do not want the new mechanism running all the time as the shaft is spinning,I wish to engage the braking mechanism at will so it needs to engage immediately and accept the forces involed and cope with them.  Oh and it must disengage at will when required.  I think some sort of ball clutch aor a ca would m lock mechanism would be the sort of thing but do not know enough about such devices and their physical power ratings etc.

Look at sprag clutches or lock up converters in modern automatic transmissions. A double clutch set up might be possible or a modified sprag with double action maybe?

Pat thanks you very much, I think the Sprag Clutch is probably the best solution as it wii be a cost effective and I can use 2 of them and that will take care of the direction os spin too.  I did look at magnetic clutches but were too expensive and only worked to low revs to engage.

Hi cosmos2c

Have a look at these sprag clutches-
