Heat treatment for SAE 4140
Heat treatment for SAE 4140
(OP)
Hi
I need to know how to treat SAE 4140 to reach some special mechanical characteristics. We use an induction treatment and cool down the steel with oil.
We need to reach three groups of properties:
1)HB 426 , tensile strengh 1531 Mpa
2)HB 283 , tensile 931 Mpa
3)HB 216 , tensile 689
I need to know weather to forge, normalize, harden, temper or what??
thanks
Miguel

RE: Heat treatment for SAE 4140
The lower brinell is an annealling value.
Is this is a minimum value? as rolled or
normalized value will give you some high
values and not need to be quench and tempered.
Normally quench and tempering this material
will give you values up to 375 brinell.
How thick are your parts? I think that this
material in the normalized state is in the
300 brinell range. I do not have any charts
before me. Trusting only on memory.
Induction hardening is generally used for
surface hardening or localized hardening
for high surfaces to act as wear surfaces.

You will have to register, but the information you need can probably be found here.
