API 6D vs API 598 for refurbished Ball Valve

API 6D vs API 598 for refurbished Ball Valve

API 6D vs API 598 for refurbished Ball Valve

(OP)
Please can somebody tell me about pressure testing requirement for refurbished 6" class 2500 Ball valve having original design designation on nameplate as API 6D.

Now the subject refurbished valve is ready for testing. However, it is on hold due to conflict on the applicable standard to be used for testing. I insist that refurbished valve shall be pressure tested (body+seat) as per original design standard API 6D whereas valve vendor doesn't agree to this and argues that only API 598 is applicable for refurbished valve.

It may be noted that though pressure testing is same, holding period varies between API 6D and API 598.

For 6" class 2500 Ball valve holding period is as follows:

API 6D - Body 5 mins and seat 5 mins.

API 598 -Body 60 seconds and seat 60 seconds.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

RE: API 6D vs API 598 for refurbished Ball Valve

API 598 only applies if referenced by the main valve standard, or if agreed between purchaser and supplier.  API 6D does not reference API 598, therefore, if 598 was not specified or agreed, then API 6D applies.

RE: API 6D vs API 598 for refurbished Ball Valve

API 6DR was written specifically for the repair and remanufacture of pipeline valves.  Clause 10.1 states "Repaired/remanufactured valves shall be pressure tested in accordance with the requirements of API Spec 6D, as a minimum.  Supplemental tests may be performed as agreed between the owner and the reconditioner."
