Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

(OP)
I peruse the structural engineering job openings occasionally on Monster and Careerbuilder just to get an idea of what the market is like.

Today I saw a job for a Structural Engineer (with a PE requirement) that would NOT be doing any actual design work.  The position required only to check the work from "the client's offshore design office".

Admittedly, I haven't looked into the position at all, but it sounds like a mill for stamping work not directly done or overseen by a PE in the state of the project. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

RE: Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

Lion06...yes, they pop up from time-to-time.  Most likely just as you described.  That kind of crap is ruining our profession.  If you can get info, report them.

I was actually considering doing just that.

RE: Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

Reporting is a good idea, but not very effective.  The company will simply insist that the engineer is doing due diligence in reviewing all the work and the company may even pay for business trips.  Of course, today they can claim webex and whatever other media assistance is out there.

very bad practice, very bad.

RE: Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

The only thing I can say is if you happen to get you're eyes of on a set of these "outsourced" documents, and they are clearly not up to par, then don't hesitate to report any gross acts of negligence.

RE: Structural Engineering Outsourcing?

abusementpark....it doesn't have to be gross negligence, just negligence....or even misconduct...or even a simple rule violation.
