Fin Fan Process Cooler

Fin Fan Process Cooler

Fin Fan Process Cooler

(OP)
I'm sitting on the sidelines at work listening to two views on how to control gas temperature when using a "Fin Fan" type cooler.  The concern is that in the winter the gas needs to stay at 85F.  The new cooler is a dual fan model using two (2) 50 HP electric motors. (this in the South Texas area).

Argument one: Cooler with no louvers and use VFD on the motors to control fan speed, thus process temp.

Argument two: Order cooler with adjustable louvers (top or top and side) and automate them with a Fisher 4196 TIC/656 Actuator.

I was just wanting to take a poll to get a feel for who (my working compatriots) is on the right track.

Any comments?

RE: Fin Fan Process Cooler

If you don't want to do a full-blown warm air recirculation plenum and louver arrangement, given that VFD operation is an option, then you might be able to just get discharge louvers on top of the bundle and have provisions to run one of the fans in reverse.  (Yes, can be done.)  That gives you warm air "push-pull".  However, chances are in South Texas, just being able to close the discharge louvers and run both fans to zero ought to be enough to keep the temperature you need.

Keep any automated louver actuators out of the air stream.

Regards,

SNORGY.

I have used auto louvers on gas coolers in amine plant/glycol dehy installations with general success.....same region.  Simple......cheap
