Consultant - Contractor

(OP)
I am the lead design and manufacturing engineer for a start-up company.  I do not have a PE.  I have my BSME and EIT credentials as well as 2 years of Civil Engineering (Project Engineering) experience and about 6 months experience as a Materials Handler Design Engineer, designing industrial conveyance systems and helping with associated structural and foundations.

In order to obtain the requisite experience (Idaho state if that helps), can I have my work 'supervised' by a PE contractor?  I mean for instance certain aspects of my design could be required to be stamped (or sometimes not).  Opinions backed by some logic would be greatly appreciated.  Also, if there is another way for me to get the required experience while leading an Agricultural Equipment Design and Manufacturing firm full-time I would appreciate guidance.

Also places I could go for the right answers if you don't happen to have them would be appreciated.  Thanks for all answers regardless.

RE: Consultant - Contractor

M98...your best source for your answer will be your state board of engineers.  They will ultimately review your application for the exam and determine if you have met the qualifications to take the exam.

Some states allow experience verification as you've described.  Many states require that your internship be under the supervision of a licensed engineer.  I'm not sure of the law in Idaho, but it looks as though their rules are similar to others in that staff and board discretion may be used in deciding qualifications for the exam.

Here's a link to the laws and rules of Idaho...

RE: Consultant - Contractor

Yes - check with your Board and don't forget that many(most) states require FOUR PE recommendations.  Doesn't mean you have to work full time under them - just that they know you and have reviewed/seen some of your work.

With small companies - this can be a challenge!!

RE: Consultant - Contractor

Not being familiar nor willing to research Idaho's requirements, I can state that the States with which I am familiar only require PE's only if the word "Engineering" or indication that it is a company selling Engineering Services to the public is indicated in the company name and/or charter.
