ASME B31.3 Intrumentation

ASME B31.3 Intrumentation

ASME B31.3 Intrumentation

I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not ASME B31.3 addresses requirements for piping instrumentation e.g. pressure and temperature gages.  When I read through the exclusions for B31.3, instrumentation was not listed yet when I look through B31.3, there are no specifics in regards to requirements.  Input would be much appreciated.

RE: ASME B31.3 Intrumentation

Do you mean the instruments themselves or the connection to process?

ASME B40.100 - 2005 Pressure Gauges & Gauge attachments

Tubing typically used in my industry (Oil&gas, upstream, produced water) is mainly to ASTM-A-269 or -213.

Thanks for your reply.  I'll give an example.  Let's say we have a pressure gage with a 1/2" Male NPT connection.  The pressure gage is screwed into a welded 1/2" Female NPT half coupling on the piping.

Are there specific B31.3 pressure gage requirements?  My understanding is that inline instrumentation is subject to B31.3 rules whereas non-inline instrumentation is not and is considered an unlisted component that must meet the piping system design requirements.

What is your feeling about this?

See B31.3, 322.3 - excludes instruments but includes instrument piping. The decision on instruments is a designer decision.
