I've got a question. Is there a way to divide a line into equal parts without guessing but instead using a compas & triangle. I know how to divide it ino 8 equal parts but I can't figure out how to divide a line into 6 equal parts after I bisect the line.
Thanks for your help, Chris

RE: Tech drawing
I use this general method to divide a line into any number, N, of equal segments:
From, say, the left end of your original line, draw another line at a convenient angle. Using a compass, strike off the same number, N, of equally spaced tic marks on the new line as the number of divisions you want to achieve. From the last tic mark, draw a line to the right end of the original line. Draw a second line, parallel to the first, from the next-to-last tic mark to the original line. Repeat the process, connecting each tic mark to the original line with a series of equally spaced parallel lines.
Obviously, the end of the original line at which you choose to begin does not matter, nor does the slope of the angled line, or the distance between the equally spaced tic marks. Hope this will be of help.

I neglected to mention that, after you draw the second line, i. e., the line from the next-to-last tic mark, it isn't necessary to draw any more lines. Just set your compass to the distance, on the original line which you are dividing, between the two lines which you have drawn from the tic marks. Then you can step off the remaining points without extending any more lines from the tic marks.
