missing mirror disply

missing mirror disply

missing mirror disply

(OP)
Mirror display will show the "mirrored" block only if the block you are mirroring the display of is visible. I have attached a picture of my screen.  The bottom block is the mirrored one.  If I zoom up on the mirrored block far enough to remove the original block from my screen, the mirrored block disappears. Please help.

RE: missing mirror disply

Try going to...

View -> Camera -> Edit...

...and near the bottom of the dialog, in the section titled 'Clipping', select the button labeled 'Fit Planes to Extents'.  Now hit OK and see if things have improved.

still nothing.  i have tried it in a new file, old files and library files.  i can see that both blocks are inside the camera.  when zooming in on the mirrored block it still disapears.

 nx7.5

RE: missing mirror disply

It's not an issue of whether you can see both bodies when in the Camera mode or not.  It has to do with the distance between the front and back clipping planes.  If auto clipping planes doesn't work, try manually move them using the sliders in the 'Clipping' section of the dialog.

RE: missing mirror disply

I don't have any problem on my system, if my clipping planes are adequately spaced.

you can see only the mirrored solid?

RE: missing mirror disply

OK, I now see what apparently you're seeing.  I'm investigating and if I learn anything, I'll report back.

perfect.  i have talked to 8-10 people & they cannot see anything either.  nx5 was that way as well.  nx3 worked.
thanks a bunch.

RE: missing mirror disply

I've gotten a response back from development as to WHY it now works the way it does (a change was made with NX 5.0).  Unfortunately we may have to accept this behavior since it's no longer under the direct control of NX, however, I've opened a PR anyway so we'll see what the final answer is.

I can reference you to 20-30 people that have struggled with nx5 and now nx7.5 for this reason.  We design many many symmetrical panels.  I go to a design review with mirror display on and there is nobody that knows that only half of the design is done.  I go all the way thru attributing everything before i actually mirror the solids.  Even the nonsymetrical parts have many things that need to be lined up from front to back....guide pins...pilots....tooling holes..keys...ect...

RE: missing mirror disply

I've done all that I can, I've opened a PR which makes that exact argument.  However, from what I've learned so far I'm not going to hold my breath since as I said, NX is not really responsible for this behavior.  Prior to NX 5.0 there was an option which when enabled provided for better graphics performance but it also resulted in the same Mirror Display problem as you're seeing today.  However, in NX 4.0 (and NX 3.0) you could disable this performance enhancement setting making Mirror Display behave better.  Unfortunately the graphic hardware and their drivers have changed since then with new industry standards which we've had to adopt so as to get the maximum performance from today graphics cards and workstation hardware.  What I was told was that this enhanced graphics behavior, which we used to be able to control, is no longer an option.  It's now ON all of the time.  What that means is that if we were to implement something like Mirror Display today we would have to take completely different approach to making it work.  Now as I said, I've opened a PR and if there is a simple 'fix' perhaps it might be addressed.  However, if it requires a complete rewrite of the code, then it will no longer be considered a PR but something which will require a official development project to implement which will move it to the status of an ER and it will have to be done as part of a future release.

Great John
I really appreciate it.
Is there anyway I can give the 20-30 people (which there's hundreds more) that could report the tremendous benefit this particular item is and would really like to see in a future release?  Just looking for someplace to direct the issue with more support from my fellow designers that would perhaps persuade a rewrite of the code.

RE: missing mirror disply

Contact GTAC and have them open PR's making the case that since this used to work as expected (in NX 3.0 and NX 4.0), that it's now a regression.  It may still get converted to an ER but at least there will be records that multiple customers are concerned with the behavior, which should help in getting this resolved, be it by a simple fix to the current code or the implementation of a new but equivalent capability.

RE: missing mirror disply

OK, I've opened a PR which was converted to an ER, which I had expected since I already knew that this will require more than a simple fix.  That being said, I recommend that if you feel that this needs to be addressed that you contact GTAC and have them open an IR/ER since at this point, any additional support from customers will help get the priorities set appropriately.
