Recover a deleted file?

Recover a deleted file?

Recover a deleted file?

(OP)
I accidently replaced a current Excel workbook file with an older file - is it possible to recover the current version?

If not possible, I will re-create it, about 12 hrs work tho.

Thanx in advance for any help.

OOOPS  never mind, problem solved. A copy of the old file was located in another folder. For some reason, Windows search hadn't listed it when I was looking for it - but I am learning this Windows 7...seems search works different than with WinXP.

RE: Recover a deleted file?

To answer your question - usually not in this situation.
That is why I ALWAYS add a rev number to my files - Rev1 - rev2, etc.

RE: Recover a deleted file?

Gave Mike a star! Always good practice to number revisions.  I usally copy and rename so I don't overwrite; Been There Done That.

RE: Recover a deleted file?

Yes - I use date code also!!!  But if I do five revs in one day - and it happens - I go back to my rev number.

Just a good practice

RE: Recover a deleted file?

For multiple revisions during the same day, I suffix letters to the date at the end of the filename.

I like Analogkid's method the best.

RE: Recover a deleted file?

how about 12132011R1
          12132011r2

Either works - just trying to keep my work safe and able to find it!!

RE: Recover a deleted file?

Good practices, all.
But why not let the operating system take care of the date?

RE: Recover a deleted file?

Many years ago I was in system admin training for a MicroVax mini computer (about the same power as a 386 PC) and IIRC it used a Unix variation called Ultrix.  The really nice file name feature was that it automatically added a revision number to the file name.  I believe it was based on a 8.3.nnnn system so you could have a file called mydoc.doc.1 and each time you saved it, the number would increment so you could go back to any version you wanted.

I always wished DOS would have adopted that system.
