Canadian Electric Code on ATS for life safety systems

Canadian Electric Code on ATS for life safety systems

Canadian Electric Code on ATS for life safety systems

Hello,

I wanted to inquire if there was any specific Canadian Electric Code that requires installation of two separate Automatic Transfer Switches i.e. one for life safety systems such as fire fighter elevator, fire pumps etc and one for egress utility loads.  I checked section 46 of CEC and there is mention of feeder cables but nothing on requirement of separate ATS.

Thank you.

Hello DRWeig,

The building involved is 4 storey residential building.  A 60KW natural gas generator set is being considered as emergency generator because life safety system loads such as fire pumps, fire fighter elevator loads are being considered to be taken on along with fire alarm system and emergency lighting equipment.  I was trying to find relevant CEC standards to provide guidance whether to incorporate 2 ATS or one.

You might need instead to discuss whether egress lighting is part of the life safety equipment in the building.  In my opinion, egress lighting is definitely life safety equiment.  I am not your authority having jurisdiction, though -- that is who you need to check with (the electrical inspector who will be telling you if you were wrong or right).

It's in section 46 of the CEC.  Here are a couple of useful links.
