Epoxy suggestion for Aluminum to Aluminum bonding?

Epoxy suggestion for Aluminum to Aluminum bonding?

Epoxy suggestion for Aluminum to Aluminum bonding?

(OP)
We have a hard-anodized aluminum 6061 tube (5" long x 1" diam.) to bond to a pair of 1 inch wide U shaped clamps across the tube at each end. The clamps hold the tube to a flat metal surface of 6061 aluminum.
The clamps are machined out of untreated 5052 aluminum.

Need a tough epoxy for a room temp Mil Spec. vibration test which is fairly challenging.

There's a close fit on the parts since it's a clamp, so the epoxy will be a super thin layer, except the edges of the clamp. Is epoxy even of use in a very thin coating like this? I expect it wouldn't hurt.

Looking for the best epoxy to use to bond the two together so the tube won't slip under vibration in any axis. We can temp cure also.

appreciate any help.

In super thin layers, Loctite may be a better choice.

As for _which_ Loctite, ask them for an application engineer.

If you can stand the cure time and a little more clearance, I might try 3M #5200 Marine Sealant (rtv polyurethane), which gets a hell of a grip once it sets up.

Or call another epoxy mfg!!

Ed's recommendation is a good one: Al-filled epoxy like Scotch-Weld 2214.

Higgler,
You could also look at Henkel, Hysol ea9309na  it is a toughened room temp epoxy designed for bonding aluminum. I also believe it has a fairly good chance of meeting the mil spec you are after.

The good engineer does not need to memorize every formula; he just needs to know where he can find them when he needs them.  Old professor

tmoose, similar, but 5" long, 1" diam.

berkshire,
Just heard from a tech rep, suggesting EA9321 or EA9396 would work. So pretty close to ea9309na.

Looks like Marine grade 5200 is the current gamplan though, with the Hysol options above as second choice. We can cut the 5200 off our aluminum if we need to change the part.

Check out Masterbond

Higgler,
Yes you can cut 5200 out with a cheese wire if you have to.
