Too stiff model (merging???)

Too stiff model (merging???)

Too stiff model (merging???)

(OP)
I am modelling a dowel column-beam connection and I've already ran some analysis. The results show that my model is much to stiff. I checked if I made some foolish mistake but everything seems OK.
I started to think about merging instances of my model. I chose merging geometry and under intersecting boundaries I used retain.
Is it possible that I accidently merged together two instances of the same part in same position so I didn't see there were two. Consequently the model would be much stiffer.
Thank you

RE: Too stiff model (merging???)

If you merged two parts that were in identical positions then you'd have just a single part. If the model is too stiff then one cause could be that you have too few elements or you have identical parts on top of each other. Of course it all depends on how you are comparing the results and your conclusion that it's too stiff.

Corus,
it's true that I if I merged two instances of the same part in samw position I would have just one part and one new instance but would that part have doubled stiffness?

RE: Too stiff model (merging???)

No, but if you're not sure then do a simple test. Create a square part, instance it twice and merge the parts. Mesh it with a single element and see how many elements/nodes you have.

RE: Too stiff model (merging???)

Hey,
i'm am having the same problem. I am also modeling beam which i merged before. Everything seems to be fine but the construction is far too stiff!

do you have any suggestions for me how i could proceed?

@human123 how did you solve your problem

Thanks!
