Concrete pile cap reinforcement

Concrete pile cap reinforcement

Concrete pile cap reinforcement

(OP)
When we design a concrete pilecap there are two approaches: Consider it as grillage of beam or deep beam or consider as a strut model. But regardless of the method, we provide the reinforcement as uniformly distributed along the whole length/breadth of the pile cap.

My question is: Can we provide the calculated reinforcement only within the width of the piles? It means making a grillage of concealed beams within the pilecap. Thus we can economize a lot on reinforcement.

Any thoughts and ideas? Thanks!

RE: Concrete pile cap reinforcement

As I understand it, you'd like to have, based on strut and ties, a series of discreet beams?  Structurally, I see nothing wrong with this so long as the full width of the footing is not used in achieving the required reinforcing area.  However, I doubt that the codes will allow such a limited distribution.

RE: Concrete pile cap reinforcement

If concentrated over the piles, then the reinforcement is not necessarily under the column.  I think both the top and bottom forces need to be considered in placement of the reinforcement.
