Design Guide 7- Errata, Mistake?

Design Guide 7- Errata, Mistake?

Design Guide 7- Errata, Mistake?

(OP)
On page 48 of DG7 under "crane column cap plates" the author makes mention of using "finger tight bolts with upset threads as a means of reducing bolt fatigue".

Do you think "upset threads" is a mistake and should be "damaged threads"?
I am unaware of upset threaded bolts being used for anything by AISC.

RE: Design Guide 7- Errata, Mistake?

"Upset threads" means the same thing as damaging or burring the threads so that the nut cannot back off.

RE: Design Guide 7- Errata, Mistake?

Common terminology in our environs, too... have seen it referenced as upset, peened, damaged and burred.

I have only seen the term used for bolts that have a root diameter  the same as the bolt shank....a significant difference in terminology.

In this case, I think it's pretty clear he means to damage the threads, otherwise why would it be linked with "finger tight"?
