what is the role mechanical engineer inside casing and tubing oil service company?

RE: casing and tubing

I think you will get more replys from a peteroleum forum.
I wish I could have made a sililar inquire 35 yr ago.
The major oil cos will generally know what they want . But for the others get familiar with : the hundreds of connections, the trade-off between strength and toughness and SCC resistance, the pros and cons of various NDE methods, pros and cons of ERW vs seamless. The four failure modes;burst, collapse, tensile and buckle. Learn the jargon, eg. tie back, scab liner, liner, get glossary from SPE, and IDCA (go to their annual meet in Netherlands). Expandable liners, coil tubing (a few modes). Then look up some SPE papers to see what current problems are.

Amrfd7:

Google the company you have the interview with, and companies in the same industry.  What do they do?  What kind of design and engineering do ME's do?  Blacksmith gave you some general topics to think about, and there are thousands of others, so you need a good sound knowledge of fundamental engineering subjects which you should have gotten in school and through experience.  Then, know some specifics about the company, as it generally impresses them that you cared enough to have some idea of who they are and what they do.  You must be interviewing for some specific job or area or department, that should give you some hints as to areas of discussion.

RE: casing and tubing

I assume this is a company that manufactures tubing and casing.  Do they manufacuure from strip or do they melt their own steel?

Find out if they manufacture welded or seamless tubing and/or casing (or both).  Then google or othewise research the machinery required to do what ever process they use.

Find out about welding machinery and induction heating equipment.

Find out about conveying equipment and lifting machinery; cranes, etc.

If they melt their own steel, find out about pollution control equipment; bag houses, dampers, actuators, etc.

Why interview with them, if you can't find enough interest to generate your own questions?

Big, that's not the Big Inch I knew.

RE: casing and tubing

Actually I'm not sure what type of company he's talking about.  If it is a Halliburton, D-Huges, Schlumberger type, or drill string supply house.

But my question I believe is still relevant.  If he asked the questions he should be asking here, he might get some real answers.

the company service are:

1.to run and pull casing sizes ranging from 5' to 30' and tubing sizes from 23/8' to 5 ½' .
has in stock award winning power tongs designed for CRA tubulars , these tongs grip tubular by an innovative design called friction grip .
2.provides computer torque turns analyzer services. We use the latest computer torque turn analyzers
3. uses Varco-BJ and Access Oil tools spider slips and elevators. Varco-BJ leads the industry in casing handling equipment by offering casing slips and elevators capable of handling casing sizes from 7' to 13 5/8'OD with capacity up to 500 ton.

RE: casing and tubing

To start with it doesn't sound like they are really a "casing and tubing company".  It sounds like they are a drilling and well servicing company.  Their role is to make a hole which includes running and cementing casing, running liners, and (apparently) running tubing.  They must be a pretty big well servicing company to think they need an entry-level ME.  The work I've done for companies like that (as a contractor) has been verifying that wellhead modifications can stand the dynamic forces of a casing plunger arriving dry and designing a trailer to haul equipment for a particular evolution.  Just regular ME stuff.

RE: casing and tubing

Narrows it down a bit (sounds like the old Weatherford/Lamb); Find a World Oil issue with the connection tables. There are hundreds but with some common chacteristics; homework assignments ,A torque shoulder, B .metal/metal seal, C. polymer seal ring,D. negative load flank, E. taper (uniform and variable), F. API dope vs lube oil, G. API 8rd, 10rd, and buttress, H. the wonderful world of gaging- working, master, grand master (maybe back to the platium meter in Paris).J, Upseta (various) and swaging. K, Look at rotary shouldered drill pipe connections in API 7. When you think you understand these , look at the Hydril 500 series (thaks Tom Blose).
Not to say that anyone fully understands all that crap.

RE: casing and tubing

API Specifcation 5CT as well as API Specification 7 & 7G.

They are a smaller size service company, not Big Red (Halliburton), Big Blue (Schlumberger) or the much lesser other guy (Baker-Hughes).  Sounds more like a tonging company or NDT inspection service.

But if you come around my shop and ask questions like the one posed, I'd probably skid you.  It should be fairly obvious what role a Mechanical Engineer, professional or otherwise, would perform in a company.
