Pipeline protection - water crossing

Pipeline protection - water crossing

Pipeline protection - water crossing

(OP)
I'm interested in erosion control methods and types of products used to repair oil/gas pipelines that have become exposed (originally buried) in water crossings.  I know riprap, gabbions and grout-filled mats are often used.  I was wondering if any new methods are being used, and if anyone has had much experience in this area.  Thank you.

RE: Pipeline protection - water crossing

I have no experience, but from fluid logic part of the solution should probably be to study the possible extreme flow/current conditons that gives the exposure.

Next would both be to protect directly the pipeline by burial with different materials, but also to see if some protective reforming of bottom could alter current path to give 'snowdrift effect' above the pipeline in stead of turbulent flow eroding the pipeline protection.

RE: Pipeline protection - water crossing

depends a lot on the hydraulics and hydrology of the crossing.

grade control, cut off wall, encasement or channel lining using:

concrete, RCC, soil cement, articulated revetment mattress (similar to your grout filled mat), possibly geoweb or turf reinforcement mat, steel casing, bridged crossing
