Groove prep for ceramic tape

(OP)
I will be doing a time study of full-pen welds with backgouging vs. full-pen welds using ceramic tape.  We will run the typical 60 degree groove for backgouging but was hoping to cut down on the volume by moving to a 45 degree for the tape since the root opening is wider.  Anyone have experience with suggested groove angles with the ceramic tape?

RE: Groove prep for ceramic tape

Depends on gap, weld process and the welder's experience & skill.  For a 3/32" gap, 60-75° is typical.  With a skilled welder that likes to run 'hot', an 1/8"+ gap, SMAW [or FCAW self-shielded], 45° may work.
