PE Construction Exam- Experience Requirements

PE Construction Exam- Experience Requirements

PE Construction Exam- Experience Requirements

(OP)
All,

I was in a discussion with a Construction Manager acquaintance who graduated with a BS-Civil Engineering from an accredited university, is in his late fifties, and appears to be very knowledgeable and astute. He has heard that there is a new (well, since 2008) module on the PE-Civil exam that specializes in Construction. He reviewed study materials, and believes he has the ability to pass the exam. He asked the question to me, "Do you think that I have the experience needed to sit for the exam?"

I'm not sure of the answer, so I wanted to put it to this group.

Is it possible that 20+ years as a construction manager (designing concrete formwork, dealing with soil grades and water runoff, etc.) would satisfy the experience requirements to sit for the exam? I doubt that was spent working under a PE. What would be the main hurdles? Is anyone aware of a similar situation? He resides in New York State.

He has not taken the FE exam, and I understand he knows that would be first and foremost.
Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Xera has it right - Go there first!!!

Asking a bunch of engineers from around the world will just get you that many different answers

RE: PE Construction Exam- Experience Requirements

Agree that Xera has it right, but gave the link for the NY board.  The individual should seek the board from his state of residence.

Keep in mind that even though there might be a specialty module available, that the individual will still have to prove basic competence in the general subject as well.  Besides...after 20 years, the Principles and Practices exam will be considerably less rigorous than the Fundamentals of Engineering exam!

....but, study up, go for it and good luck!!

Ron, He states that he resides in New York.

RE: PE Construction Exam- Experience Requirements

Is the issue that the person may not be approved to sit for the exam because the experience does not include working under a PE?  It may be all in the way it's worded.  The person might be able to think back over the 20 years and remember those times he or she has worked out engineering solutions that were approved by a PE.

RE: PE Construction Exam- Experience Requirements

I think he may need signed certifications from the PE's he worked for. The number of PE's may be 3 to 5.
