Area of interest in RT

Area of interest in RT

Area of interest in RT

(OP)
What is defined as the area of interest in RT? We have a pipe butt weld which has to be 100% xrayed. Per drawing upon fabrication an adjacent branch weld is encroaching upon the HAZ of the butt weld. Is it OK to perform RT by keeping the film just barely to cover the edge of the butt weld or does the Code require that xx inches on either side of a pipe butt weld should be covered during RT?

RE: Area of interest in RT

It is assumed that you are refering to T-281, Article 2 of ASME V; however, it appears that you may be confusing the area of interest on the film versus the actual weld requiring examination.

On a weld radiograph, the area of interest would include the weld and HAZ as shown on the radiographic image (film).

RE: Area of interest in RT

I should also include the area of interest under T-275 with regard to the location markers.

RE: Area of interest in RT

There are cases where alternate inspection methods must be employed due to encroachments, configuration, etc.

Stanweld,
My question was intended to understand the area of interest in the weld radiograph. Does the Code say that the HAZ should be included? Can a second weld come near the HAZ an existing weld? In this case can the xray film capture both the butt weld and section of a fillet weld in close proximity? Will there be a conflict in proper interpretation?

RE: Area of interest in RT

It is quite difficult not to include the HAZ in a radiograph of a weld mandated to be RT examined per the applicable Design/Construction Code. A second weld may be visible within the area of interest. The radiograph shall capture the butt weld to be examined and may capture an adjacent fillet weld or other butt weld. The image of the butt weld, required to be radiographed, within the location markers (if applicable) is the area of interest.
