Need common sense spur gear calculation
Need common sense spur gear calculation
(OP)
I have a project that requires a 10hp hydraulic motor to drive a 16" diameter drum thru a 7:1 gear ratio.
The drum winds a 1/4" dia. cable with a 3000# load at it's 8" radius, at 5 RPM (the motor is running at 35 RPM).
I'd like to use a 12 tooth spur gear mated to a 84 tooth spur gear (all steel, 6 DP, 2" wide face).
Is that sufficient? I get different answers from Boston Gear and Martin Gear.

They have a free software package that you can download. I have found it extremely usful.

Thanks, I checked out the fairfieldmfg.com site and found a program named kec_vlm.exe, but it's password protected, and there's no description of it's purpose.
Is this the right program? Do you have the password?
