Cost of X-Ray analysis
Cost of X-Ray analysis
(OP)
we found slag in the basemetal(M50) of one of our forgings destructively, and we have already decided to test the bar stock for slag voids. we have another forging that we had made, and I was wondering if it was worth x-raying (looking for similar voids) as opposed to just sectioning it up. these are just prototype pieces and cost ~200usd

RE: Cost of X-Ray analysis
Depending on the size of your forging, I would consider ultrasonic testing (shear wave) versus RT. Shear wave UT is more suitable for finding voids/slag, and data is obtained real time. The cost of radiography (X-ray) in an industrial NDT lab can vary from $500 up to $2500 USD (depends on set-up).
RE: Cost of X-Ray analysis
UT is the best way to go on the bars, and maybe on the forging too unless it is a very complicated geometry.

RE: Cost of X-Ray analysis
Ultrasonic testing will be cost effective and it could be done onsite.

RE: Cost of X-Ray analysis
I was looking into X-ray to get better resolution on the locations of the inclusions, because we really don't know the severity of the slag/voids. The forging is thin-walled and has a complex geometry. Also, shipping isn't really an issue I could probably throw a stone and hit the place that does our testing. Looks like I'll be going down the fun(destructive) road and just sectioning it to bits. thanks again.
