Neutalization of Acid Mine Pond

Neutalization of Acid Mine Pond

Neutalization of Acid Mine Pond

(OP)
I know the pH of a mine pond (3.6) and I have a good estimate of the pond volume (168000 C.F.).  Can someone help me determine the amount of Hydrated Lime Ca(OH)2 I need to to treat the water so that I can discharge it at a target pH of at least 6.0?

If it helps, the mine pond was created from strip mining coal that contained pyritic sulfur.

Thanks.

RE: Neutalization of Acid Mine Pond

Nobody could do anything but guess (probably low) unless you do a titration of a few samples of the water.

RE: Neutalization of Acid Mine Pond

Is this homework??

RE: Neutalization of Acid Mine Pond

Mixing properly would also bean issue. A better approach would be to pass the effluent through a bed of crushed limestone (calcium carbonate) to neutralize the acid. The reaction is self-regulating.
