Hello there!

I am looking for tips to solve a geometry optimization with Abaqus (--> attached file
http://files.engineering.com/download.aspx?folder=db94b8e6-47da-4a03-80e2-468ba1796269&file=Model2optimize.jpeg)

Mat1-4 are different materials, all with different thermoelastoplastic mat.data. A certain flux is given. Thermal mismatch stress is caused at each interface.
By variating (h1,h2,h3) the stress profile along the external edge changes accordingly.  I want to find an optimum set (h1,h2,h3) which minimizes the stress peak (of course within a given range of variation for h1,h2,h3).

My idea is to start from a set [h1,h2,h3]_0 and let matlab find the optimum analyzing each time the stress profile output from abaqus.
After that, Matlab provides a new set [h1,h2,h3] from which a new Abaqus model should be generated and analyzed until the optimized geometry is found.

So far nice theory..but in practice how should I proceed with the script?

one idea:
I write a py-script which generates a new inp file at each iteration. However, I do not think new "nodes" nor "elements" are required for remeshing at each iteration once a well refined mesh is provided for the starting configuration of the layers. The script will just move prexisting nodes
to mach the new prescribed layer thicknesses (h1,h2,h3).
is "*PARAMETER SHAPE VARIATION" of some help for my purpose ?

thank you very much for your help!
Alex
