I have a question about how much current would flow for a ground fault on an ungrounded capacitor bank.  The cap bank is a 12.47 kV, 1800 kVAR and it is being fed from a transformer with a 1000 A neutral grounding resistor.  If one of the capacitors internally faulted to ground, how much ground current would flow?

If your capacitor bank develops an internal fault or flashes over to ground then the ground fault current would be limited to 1000A by the neutral grounding resistor, assuming it doesn't develop into a phase to phase fault.If you have a ground fault external to the capacitor bank it will not contribute ground fault current as it is an ungrounded bank.In the context of metal enclosed capacitor banks, ungrounded refers to the star point of the three phase capacitor connection rather than to an absence of a connection to ground for the enclosure itself.

Why is it usually recommended to install an ungrounded cap bank on a resistance grounded system?
