Adding Vents to Pressure Vessels

Adding Vents to Pressure Vessels

Adding Vents to Pressure Vessels

(OP)
To satisfy ASME section V111 – DIV 1 UG-99, 'Vents shall be provided at all high points of the vessel in the position in which it is to be tested to purge all possible air pockets while the vessel is filling' I'm looking at adding a vent to the top of a pressure vessel that is being built.

Since this is just for filling during hydrotest I am thinking of using a 1/2" plug that fits into a tapped plate that blanks of a T piece. Once the test is done this will not have to be opened again.

Also I am wondering if the thread can be dry sealed (because its a tapered thread) or does a thread sealant need to be used.

Obviously I am not looking for magic answers however I would appreciate a direction of where to look for answers.

RE: Adding Vents to Pressure Vessels

mrt0mmy, not sure what "tapped plate that blanks of a T piece" means, but vessels are vented / drained thru pipe taps all the time.

I definitely recommend thread sealant.

Regards,

Mike

The coils we manufacture have vertical riser pipes in them. At the top of this riser a Tee piece is fitted, with the side connection going to a heat exchanger and the top connection blanked off. It is in this blank I am wanting to insert a plug.

You should probably also review UG-43.
