Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

We have to make weld between tube and tubesheet. Tubes material
SA-789 UNS S31803, tubesheet material is SA-516-70, welding process shall be GTAW.
Would ER309LMo be a good option? Any suggestion please?
Thanks for any favor.

RE: Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

Its been a few years since I reviewed the duplex welding requirements, but as I recall you must "overmatch " the weld using incolnel weld , for duplex to carbon steel, to avoid migration of Fe to the duplex. Search for teh fabrication requirements - they are posted online by the main material suppliers.

RE: Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

It depends on the service conditions as to whether to use a NiCrMo filler or 309LMo. We've made the dissimilar welds successfully with E/ER309LMo, E/ERNiCrMo-3,E/ERNiCrMo-4 & E/ERNiCrMo-10.

Stanweld,

ER2209 is used to weld duplex to duplex, we never used it to weld duplex to carbon steel. Do you have any experience?

we have to make weld between duplex and CS.

RE: Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

309L is the default filler metal for carbon steel to duplex.  Normally you don't worry about weld area types of corrosion because you are right beside carbon steel.

The principal issue will be toughness from any untoward phases created by the dilution.  Nickel alloy weld metals tend to produce thinner martensitic layers.

We have used ER2594 to make the weld at the request of the Owner/
Operator (large Petrochemical company).

RE: Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

stanweld, do you have any idea of how the ER2595 welds are holding up?  I prefer 309LMo or Inconel, but good alternatives are something I would like to be aware of, and a useful thing to know.

RE: Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

Duwe6,
So far no problems but the weld has only been in service for a little over a year. Our "standard practice", when no direction is provided by the Owner/Engineer, is also to use ER309LMo depending on service temperature (normally service temps are below 350F).

RE: Duplex Satinless Steel with CS

Thanx, sir.
