Welding Metal Deck to Supporting beams at 6:12 slope

Welding Metal Deck to Supporting beams at 6:12 slope

Welding Metal Deck to Supporting beams at 6:12 slope

(OP)
Is there any issues with welding metal deck to the supporting steel for a 6:12 slope?  We are requiring 3/4" puddle welds that will fuse to the supporting steel.  Also are welders who weld steel decking to hot rolled support required to be certified with AWS D1.3.  Currently we have welding certifications that state the welders are certified to D1.1 standards but it appears that they might be required to be certified to D1.3 standards according to steel deck institute standards.  I hope this all makes sense.

Regards,

S. Bouvia

The main issue is that it is difficult to do. For beams of that slope you will get a better quality attachment by using Hilti pins instead of puddle welds.

D1.3 governs in this situation.

puddle weld = plug weld?

Never heard that term before.

What type of a structure is being built?

You can use "weld washers" to retain the weld puddle during the forming and freezing of the puddle.

ID needs to be bigger than the minimum weld 'nugget' diameter, and at least 1/16" thick.  If 1/16" fails, go to a thicker washer.  Try to get unplated washers.

Also, try getting a better Welder.  Puddle welds look easy, but take a lot of skill and practice.  A highly skilled Welder can do fine on a 6:12 slope, but it is tough.  Anticipate about 10% bad welds from the expert Welder at slope, without weld washers.

Brimstoner - typically used to describe a weld much like a plug weld, only no hole to start with.  You burn through the decking with the electrode while welding.
